"What's the new Mary Jane?" [May. 10th, 2007|09:19 pm]

There are probably a lot of people who aren't getting offended by this statue. I mean, hey, she has all her clothes on and all that.

Me, I'm several variations of pissed off by it. All they missed was having Mary Jane six months pregnant. Well, that and maybe they should have stuck her in Daisy Dukes and a belly shirt to really get the point across.

So what's next? Ms. Marvel lovingly polishing Iron Man's armor?

Don't give them any ideas.

Well, I'm not sure I'd be giving them ideas that they haven't already had. I'm still wrinkling my forehead at the way She-Hulk went off the rails, and never mind the rest of the Civil War silliness that seems unlikely to abate any time soon. Ms. Marvel is pretty much getting the usual treatment from the looks of things, which is not particularly positive.

I haven't run across anyone who likes it, unsurprisingly. However, it shows "Sold Out" at the vendor's site, so someone likes it.

One of the often repeated comments was "Where does she store her internal organs?"

That is....I don't even have words for that. Or rather I have too many.

One of the most asinine things I've ever seen...

...there is a line between being a supportive character (which Mary Jane certainly is for Spider-Man) and being subservient to the point of being stupid. And this crosses it, easily.

Re: One of the most asinine things I've ever seen...

I think that line-crossing is what's getting my goat. It isn't the size zero body with the 42DD breasts; as jaie has noted, the figure itself isn't out of line with the comics market, and is pretty mild overall. It's the gleeful pandering to the barefoot & pregnant thing that's hurl-inducing.

Mary Jane started out as a vivacious, energetic beauty who was never one for being studious, but this statue is neither that character, nor the character she became.

Well, I would be a lot more offended if it was Aunt May. ;)

I know at least one person -- box_in_the_box -- who'd be delighted if it was Ultimate Aunt May. Which goes to prove that the world harbors some very strange people.

Wow. Lets just add this to the list of reasons why I dont like Marvel Comics. Honestly? How can comic companies say they want to get the girl audience but still put out trash like this? Guh.

It isn't just Marvel. DC has repeatedly shamed themselves with the Supergirl stuff, and Power Girl's Magic Expanding Kryptonian Breasts are pretty much a tradition, and let's not even get into the Witchblade and Fathom stuff.

This is just so gormless, though.
